    A negative rating for Negative.

    I'm not sure what accomplished director/producer/cinematographer Joshua Caldwell was thinking taking on this project.

    This film has got to be the epitome of terrible writing and should be a classroom example of 'what not to do' when writing a screenplay. Why would Joshua take on (clearly) amateur writer Adam Gaines script is beyond me. Even his good directing and excellent cinematography could not save this disaster.

    Aside from the super obvious plot holes and very poor story overall, the dragged-out unnecessary dialogue made this film unbearable and extremely boring. The way too long 1h 39min film length felt like 4 hours and I found myself saying "get on with it already, who cares!" when the two leads would just ramble on about nothing relevant. This movie may have been interesting if it was a 30 min short film (which oddly enough is the only minimal writing experience Adam Gaines has).

    The acting was decent and Katia Winter was very easy on the eyes to look at, but her chemistry with Simon Quarterman was very unconvincing. Maybe it was the boring dialogue they had that made their chemistry absent.

    Even the maybe total of 10 minutes of action scenes were overly dragged out. The rest of the film was primarily useless garbage dialogue with absolutely no point to the story - start to finish.

    Don't waste your time with this one. See the trailer, and that's all the good and interesting parts you'll need to see.

    This gets a 3/10 strictly for the directing and cinematography.

    I watch a lot of movies and I like to give them all a chance just in case there is something interesting or exciting to warrant a viewing Unfortunately this movie has none of these features it is pointless and offers nothing in the way of story line,acting or direction The plot is non-existent with the actors just going through the motions and the dialogue is sooo boring its embarrassing. I wish the previous reviewers had posted earlier as this would have saved me 95 mins of my time

    The guy still used a cheap, out-dated film camera took pictures? Still got dark room with red light to develop his films? Wow, if the story background is in the 80', I might buy the whole story more willingly. As to the storyline itself, that guy just took pictures randomly in the street, and he randomly took a picture of a woman in the park, then went home to develop what he took that day. Then the woman just showed up, knocked his apartment door and asked him to give her the negative. This is when I WOWed again. Then the so-called two killers, one male and one female Columbian Cartel, just like her showed up at this guy's apartment. Then well, she forced this guy to run away with her to Phoenix, Arizona. The storyline and the scenarios simply got so many loopholes that even a moron would find it difficult to swallow. She had already burnt and dumped everything she used to have, credit cards, phone, SIM card, passports, flash drive...whatever, there's no electronic chip planted under her skin, so why these two Columbian killers could still so easily follow up her trail? Why the British intelligence got to do business with the Columbian Cartel? Why she had to force this deadbeat so-called photographer to run away with her? Just because if without taking a male on the road trip and two assassins chasing after her, the story simply would become impossible to develop?

    Bad movies are always full of holes without any logic, this film, although shot with some beautiful road scenes, sunrise and sunset, desert....yet the whole story was just based on a ridiculous ground. The two leading roles, the so-called British agent (Spy? For what?!) and the down-and-out photographer, actually performed pretty good, but again, if the premises of the storyline are ridiculous, there's no way to make them great. When films have to force the viewers to abandon their I.Q. and basic logic senses, they are just BAD films, and this one is no exception.

    For some reason in this day and age, Hollis is still taking pictures with an old film style camera when he comes across a good looking female in the park and takes her photo. (My first impression was annoyance; I would be pretty annoyed if people took pictures of me on the street and then claimed the right to do so. Without a model release signature such photos are useless.) After developing the pictures in his darkroom the same woman (Natalie) tracks him down and demands the photo and negatives, due apparently to some bad guys chasing her. This is so improbable I began to turn off at this point. The two of them flee to Phoenix. Supposedly Natalie is a former British spy who got mixed up with a Colombian drug cartel and at this point, I realised that I had seen this movie before, 6 times at least, except instead of "Natalie" it was Vin Diesel / Kiefer Sutherland / Van Damme etc. etc., in the part. The movie has very little action and the plot is a waste of time. Give this one a miss.

    Natalie (Katia Winter) has a great opening scene in a Chinese restaurant that we don't see, which is out first clue. In a park, Hollis (Simon Quarterman), a lonely sad sack photographer, snaps a photo of Natalie who somehow manages to find his apartment and demands the photo back. In what amounts to a semi-abduction Hollis goes off with Natalie who has a bag of cash, a gun, and 2 passports, but that is where the Jason Bourne comparisons end. At this point you expect some kind of Bourne tactics, but instead our couple drive a Volvo across the desert and fill us in with background that didn't help the film.

    What we find out is that Natalie can take a punch to the face, but the dialogue was Jason Statham bland by design and it lacked the action. Did I mentioned they were driving a Volvo? Who carries a box of strike matches around instead of a Bic? Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

    Katia Winter star in this understated, psychological thriller about a British operative who ends up having to confiscate a negative from a freelance photographer of a picture he took of her in order to remain as a ghost from those who are seeking to kill her. In the process, both she and the reluctant photographer find themselves on the run. Directed by Joshua Caldwell who also directed Be Somebody (2016), a comedy romance drama that also happens to echo a similar understated tone and offers a refreshing diversion into a more realistic interplay between characters that Negative presents. Negative together with Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow (2018) and Daryl Hannah in The Job (2003) allow female assassin or professional agents that emphasize the psychological drama over the intensity of special effects, explosions, and action scenes of over the top mass killings or hand to hand combat in a choreographed martial arts. At the same time, the sustainability of audience's interest is made much more difficult, especially with the marketing of Negative's trailer with emphasized the action portion of the movie much to the disappointment of a good segment of the audience.

    The more authentic characters in this movie provide the audience with a more thoughtful movie about human character though the movie struggles to balance the tension along with the somewhat superficial assumption of how these two people are so easily followed. Other similar movies have been able to incorporate rather more stylized plots or characters in their own psychological drama versions of this genre such as The Numbers Station (2013), The Tailor of Panama (2001), The American (2010), and Eye of the Needle (1981) or comedic versions of this genre such as Miss Meadows (2014), The Matador (2005), Wild Target (2010), Daisy & Violet (2011), and In Bruges (2008). Negative instead remains faithful to its depiction of what might be considered authentic humans whose live intersect in psychologically traumatic ways and how they individually and collectively cope with it.

    Was drawn into seeing 'Negative', with a cool poster/cover, a promising trailer, an intriguing premise and as someone with a general appreciation for drama/thrillers. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there, made me though apprehensive.

    It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws are here present in those films, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'Negative' is lacklustre, with so many huge flaws and doesn't do enough with its potential, which was hardly small. There is not much to recommend in 'Negative'.

    Lets start with the positives.. The scenery is atmospheric and spooky, and is surprisingly well shot.

    'Negative' also starts off promisingly, it does intrigue and it does have creepiness in parts.

    There is the odd assured directing touches and Katia Winter is quite good.

    Going on to the negatives, the story does feel over-stretched and some of it comes over as vague and under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less unsettled and never gaining momentum. Too many characters are too sketchy and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates.

    Making the film feel bland and forgettable with not enough heart put into it. The effects are ropy at best, the sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions) and excepting the quite good Katia Winter the acting isn't great, Sebastian Roche coming off worst, and the chemistry is bland.

    Dialogue can be stilted and rambling while the pace and film drags on forever after such an intriguing start and doesn't recover. Even the ending however is botched, due to being so afterthought-like and with no sense of how to end it. Found too many of the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or scary and the supposedly creepy atmosphere dreary, due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations and the lack of tension and suspense.

    A lot of 'Negative' has underdeveloped plot elements and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or unsettling.

    There is not enough threat here and what there is of it tends to be used poorly, while it is unimaginative and is more odd than scary or suspenseful, completely failing to show any sense of horror. Some badly sagging momentum too and a lot of weirdness. The direction is uneven, with some assured moments but a lot of ill-at-ease ones too.

    Concluding, lacklustre but not without its moments. 4/10 Bethany Cox

    'Negative' is a dialogue film about trust and courage presenting opposite characters on the run from a cartel. There are several well- acted scenes, and others that seem like alternative shots better left out. While some plot elements seem contrived, the direction and choreography work in the movie's favor to drive a sequence of captivating themes by way of conversation that trample the sleaziness and pretentiousness of lesser films, all with the backdrop of a majestic desert that connects Los Angeles and Arizona.

    Sebastian Roché? Why does he have first billing? His acting is terrible, he whines and shrinks and shrivels at every turn. He is not believable as someone a professional killer would save. The actress who leads this film is very good. She is an ex-British agent of some kind on the run from Columbians, she encounters the inspid, timid, unredeemable man ( Sebastian Roché) early one through a photo that he takes. The action here is slow, the direction is not good at all, the story is good but could have been, should have been much better. The photography does a pretty poor job of taking in the spectacular vistas of the great basin desert. the woman here is the story and she gets second billing, a fact that is absolutely insulting and outrageous. The so-called male lead is not worth the film he used up being on screen. It is to bad, with a few tweaks by better professionals, this could have been a much better film.

    This movie is about a little girl trying to act like a man. This only works in the movies ladies. Try it in real life and that male "hostage" would have you out cold in a heartbeat.

    Loved this movie. Joshua Caldwell actually takes the time for the audience to get to know and understand the characters so you care about them once things get tense. Most Hollywood movies could take note. The action is well done, performances are spot on and I love the little details throughout the movie that add suspense and character. Most films like this would jump straight to the next location. Instead we get to see how things develop for the characters. Very well done, beautifully shot and excellent editing as well.

    Negative is a rare treat. It is a limited budget Indie action film that has the look, feel, and heartfelt acting of a high-quality big budget movie. Katia Winter gives Academy Award worthy performance. Would be terrific to see on the big screen. No spoilers. Just sit back and enjoy as the story unfolds. Would Rate as 12 if possible.

    Have to write to defend this... it's a perfectly decent film.

    Katia Winter (Natalie) is good, captivating even, and everyone else is fine where, except for the photographer, they perform calm, minimalist characters. It fits with the mood of the film, some nice contemplative scenes, and dialog that, while others have said is weak, is also fine. Bits of mundane, predictable conversation isn't so far from real life I suspect, and I think it adds to the film, to keep it 'small'.

    Not sure I know what cinematography really is, nor directing for that matter, but it seems relatively well put together.

    I would agree that the weakness is the story logic, It almost worked that there was no time spent showing how the pursuers were tracking our leads, but not quite. Even a scene or two of them just asking a shop employee or two would have been enough (there was a nice moment where the male pursuer chats to a little boy tho). But ultimately, never saying how Natalie found our photographer or why it would matter so much to our pursuers kind of gnawed at me.
